I think this is an important even that could also raise awareness of our bioregion and Cascadian bioregional identity. Any comments?

Title: What are the most noteworthy sustainability and...
I'm helping to organize and will be taking part in a bike tour from Vancouver, BC to Berkeley, CA, to help build awareness of and live out the ideals of the organization BALLE, the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies. Our trip will take us through Oregon along the coast on Highway 101 (we may also be detouring through Portland for a day). I'd appreciate any recommendations for projects, businesses, and sites that are worth stopping for--independent, local businesses making a mark for their practices or promotion of local living economies, great sustainability and self-sufficiency demonstration sites, and the like. We are especially looking for places right along Hwy 101, as it is difficult for us to make our schedule while detouring much from our route.

The trip begins May 14 in Vancouver and ends May 31 in Berkeley. We expect to ride the Oregon coast May 18 - 24.

For more information on the bike ride (which is open to and seeking new participants!):

  • Bryon could you post this message in Portland Indy Media, Seattle Indy Media, Rogue Valley Indy Media, the Bay Area Indy Media and if they are working either of the British Columbia Indy Medias. Post them with a contact number. I think the critical masses wiould join you or at least you could have them come out to ride part ofthe way with a tour.

Also there is the Buy Local groups that would be interested plus if someone with a Doug (Cascadian flag) could added it to the front of the tour we could make that more known. Collin has such a flag.
    • ya'll rock! this is a great tour! i'm sad we're not on your route, cuz the Heartsong Herbal Brewing Company in Ashland Oregon is all the things you are representing and seeking! if you ever do travel via the I-5, please stop and see us! We're just off Exit 14, we converted Ashland's abandoned Pizza Hut into the Chai Hut: our offices, manufacturing facility, distribution center and Food Artisans Gallery & Cafe.... we'll gladly hydrate you on your way through, meanwhile, best wishes of strength and solidarity go with you on this epic and noble venture!

      • elizabeth,

        here is several ideas:

you could arrange a Ashland to the coast rendevous with the Cascadia Bike Tour or convince Bryan to take a detour or a round trip up through the Rogue Valley, Willamette and then up the rest of I-5 to Seattle. Just some ideas.

I would suggest all interested to contact Byran (he is one of the Bryans of the group) and keep us all informed. Plus spread the word .. I think every community's critical mass should b invlved someway even if it is to rid part of he way or offer clean water. Hell why not get a senator or governor or congressperson involved or a city mayor (Tom Potter in Portland for example).
